history

The Dumna tribe of the Yokut Native Americans once called this home, living in harmony with the environment, and fishing for Chinook salmon in the San Joaquin River.

Then came the Gold Rush and a new prized resource was found in the river’s waters. Roads soon followed and Fort Miller was built, eventually lending its name to the nearby settlement of Millerton.

In those days, stagecoaches and pony express riders raised plumes of dust as people came from across America to work in lumber processing, mineral refining, and commerce.

With the completion of the Friant Dam in 1945, the original town of Millerton disappeared under the waters of the newly dedicated Millerton Lake.

But it was not forgotten; in 1965 the granite Millerton Courthouse was reconstructed on the higher ground of Mariners Point at the edge of the lake which is enjoyed for swimming, fishing, camping, and boating.

Now, thanks to the efforts of a select group of the most respected builders, we believe it’s time to live in harmony at The Preserve at Millerton Lake.

As with the original inhabitants, the San Joaquin River attracted gold rush prospectors who arrived in 1851. During the construction of the Friant Dam about 357 pounds of gold was found, worth over $7 million today.

With the prospectors came the stagecoach. Beginning in 1859, the Hice & Company stage line delivered mail and passengers from Visalia to Hornitos, with a stop in Millerton.
